What is Sade Sati

साढ़े साती

Sade Sati is the period of about seven and a half years when Saturn passes through the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from your Moon sign. The name means seven and a half. It is one of the most discussed transits in Vedic astrology, and one of the most misunderstood. Its effects depend on the whole chart, not on the transit alone.

What Sade Sati is

Saturn, or Shani, is the slowest moving of the classical planets. It takes about two and a half years to pass through one sign. Sade Sati begins when Saturn enters the sign before your Moon sign and ends when it leaves the sign after it. In between, it crosses your Moon sign itself. Three signs at two and a half years each make about seven and a half years.

Your Moon sign is your rashi, the sign the Moon occupied at your birth. Sade Sati is counted from it, not from your ascendant. In Vedic astrology the Moon stands for the mind and the feel of daily life, and Saturn stands for discipline, duty and time. So Saturn's slow passage over the Moon is read as a long season of steady testing and maturing.

The three phases

Sade Sati has three phases of about two and a half years each. The first begins when Saturn enters the 12th sign from your Moon sign. The second is Saturn in your Moon sign itself. The third is Saturn in the 2nd sign from it. Classically, the first phase is linked with expenses and rest, the second with the mind and body, and the third with family and money.

Effects are not the same for everyone, and they are not uniformly bad. They depend on the full chart: Saturn's strength and house, the condition of the Moon and the dasha running at the time. Some people find Sade Sati a period of discipline, steady progress and lasting lessons. The Moon sign alone gives a general picture, not a verdict.

Shani ki dhaiya

Dhaiya, or Shani ki dhaiya, is a shorter transit of about two and a half years. The word means two and a half. It begins when Saturn enters the 4th sign from your Moon sign, called Kantak Shani, or the 8th sign, called Ashtama Shani. Kantak means thorn, and Ashtama means eighth. Each lasts as long as Saturn stays in that one sign.

The 4th sign is linked with home, the mother and peace of mind. The 8th is linked with sudden changes and hidden matters. Dhaiya is read with those themes in mind. Reading it well means looking at where Saturn sits in the birth chart, which houses it rules and how the running dasha supports it. As with Sade Sati, the transit alone never fixes the result.

Remedies people follow

Classical tradition offers simple remedies for Saturn. Reciting the Hanuman Chalisa is widely followed. So is chanting a Shani mantra, such as Om Sham Shanaishcharaya Namah, a set number of times. People keep these as daily or weekly habits through the transit, as a way to stay steady and focused.

Saturn stands for labour and service, so service to the poor and to labourers is seen as the most fitting remedy. On Saturday some people donate black sesame or mustard oil. These are acts of discipline and kindness. They are followed in faith, not as a guarantee, and they do not replace steady effort and sound judgment.

Questions people ask

How do I know if my Sade Sati is running?

Check your Moon sign, which is your rashi. Sade Sati runs while Saturn is in the sign before it, in it, or in the sign after it. Our yearly horoscope for each rashi shows Saturn's position for the year, so you can see where Saturn stands from your sign.

How long does Sade Sati last?

About seven and a half years, in three phases of roughly two and a half years each. Because Saturn sometimes moves backward near a sign boundary, the exact start and end dates can show a short pause and restart.

Is Sade Sati always bad?

No. Tradition does not read it as bad for everyone. The result depends on Saturn's place and strength in your chart, the Moon and the dasha running. Many people describe it as a time of hard work and lasting lessons.
