Graha
Surya (Sun)
सूर्य
Surya, the Sun, is the king of the grahas and the natural significator of the soul. Every other planet is read in relation to its light. In a Parashari chart Surya shows self-respect, the father, authority and vitality, and its condition tells how steadily a person stands in the world.

What Surya stands for
Surya is the atma karaka in the simplest sense: the part of you that says 'this is who I am'. It speaks about dignity, purpose and the way you carry responsibility. A chart with a clear Surya usually belongs to someone who knows what they stand for, even when they say little about it.
In family life Surya points to the father and to elders who hold authority. In the world it points to government, officers, hospitals and anyone who leads from a position of trust. In the body it relates to the heart, the eyes and general vitality, which is why the Sun is read first when judging strength.
When Surya is strong
Surya is strong in Mesh, where it is exalted, deepest at 10 degrees, and in its own sign Simha. A well placed Sun gives steady confidence, a natural ability to lead and the habit of taking responsibility without being pushed. Such a person is respected by seniors and trusted by juniors.
Friendship matters too. Surya gains support from the Moon, Mars and Jupiter, and it does well in the kendra and trikona houses. Strength here shows up quietly: a good relationship with the father or a mentor, honour at work, and the energy to keep a daily routine going.
When Surya is weak
Surya is weak in Tula, where it is debilitated, deepest at 10 degrees, and when it sits close to Venus or Saturn, its enemies. A weak Sun can show as hesitation to take credit, a strained bond with the father or a sense that authority is hard to earn. It is a theme to understand, not a verdict.
Closeness to another planet also changes things. A Sun that falls very near the Moon or Mercury gives a different flavour from one that stands alone. Classical astrologers always look at the house, the sign and the aspects together before saying anything about how Surya will behave.
Traditional remedies
In the tradition, Surya is honoured with the Aditya Hridayam stotra and the Surya mantra, recited at sunrise. Sunday is its weekday, and many families keep a simple fast on that day. Offering water to the rising Sun is an old and gentle practice that asks nothing but a few quiet minutes.
Traditional donations for Surya are wheat and jaggery, given on a Sunday. Service to the father, to teachers and to elders is considered the truest remedy, since Surya signifies them. A ruby is associated with Surya, but a gemstone should only be worn after a full chart reading, never on a general recommendation.
